TOUR DESCRIPTION

Pisa and Lucca are two of Tuscany's most captivating destinations, each offering a unique blend of architecture, history, food and wine that deserves to be experienced up close and at a leisurely pace. Your tour will begin directly from your accommodation, so you can relax from the very first moment and let us take care of everything.

After a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside, we will arrive in Pisa and head straight to the Piazza dei Miracoli, one of the most breathtaking squares in the world. Here you will stand before the extraordinary Romanesque ensemble of the Pisa Cathedral, the Baptistery and the world-famous Leaning Tower, all set against an expanse of immaculate green lawns. These masterpieces, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, represent the pinnacle of Tuscan Romanesque architecture and have inspired artists, architects and travellers for centuries. We can book your Leaning Tower tickets in advance, allowing you to climb to the top without the stress of long queues — access is strictly limited each day and tickets are rarely available on the spot.

After exploring the Piazza dei Miracoli you will have free time to stroll through Pisa's elegant city centre, browse its shops or simply walk along the banks of the Arno River, lined with handsome Renaissance palaces reflected in the water.

Before lunch we will drive you to Lucca, the second jewel of your day. Passing through the magnificent 16th-century city walls — among the best preserved Renaissance fortifications in Europe — you will enter a town full of surprises and charm at every turn. We will reserve a carefully selected restaurant where you can discover the authentic flavours of Lucca's cuisine, paired with wines produced in the gentle hills just north of the city.

After lunch the afternoon is yours to explore freely. Lucca rewards slow, unhurried walking: you will discover the stunning elliptical Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, built over the foundations of a Roman amphitheatre; long medieval streets now lined with fashion boutiques and jewellery shops; ancient towers rising above rooftops; and delightful pastry shops where you can taste traditional Lucchese sweets. For a different perspective, you can rent a bicycle and ride along the top of the wide tree-lined walls, one of the most enjoyable and unique experiences in all of Tuscany.

If you are a music or culture lover, Lucca has a rich calendar of events throughout the year. The Lucca Summer Festival brings world-class pop and rock artists to perform in the historic piazzas, while Lucca Comics & Games, held in autumn, is one of the largest comics and gaming festivals in Europe. The house where Giacomo Puccini, one of the greatest opera composers of all time, was born and worked is also open to visitors and well worth a stop.

At the end of the day we will drive you back to your accommodation, leaving you with wonderful memories and no logistical worries.

Your expert Driver Guide, fluent in English, will be at your disposal throughout the day, sharing stories, history and insider tips to make your experience truly special. If you would like a more in-depth introduction to the history and art of either city, we can arrange a Pisa Walking Tour and/or a Lucca Walking Tour with one of our Certified Guides — just let us know when you enquire.

Q&A – Why Visit Pisa & Lucca

Q: Why is Pisa more than just the Leaning Tower?

The Leaning Tower is just the beginning. Pisa was for centuries the dominant naval power of Tuscany, whose fleets crossed the Mediterranean reaching North Africa, Asia, France, Spain and Portugal. This extraordinary openness to the world brought back not only wealth but ideas, art and culture: the refinement of Moorish civilization, Indian mathematics, and architectural influences from across the known world. The magnificent Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Tower themselves are the direct expression of this cosmopolitan golden age. Pisa was so advanced for its time that it founded one of Italy's oldest universities in 1343.

Q: What makes Lucca unique compared to other Tuscan towns?

Lucca is one of the very few cities in Italy that managed to remain an independent republic all the way until the arrival of Napoleon in the 19th century. While Pisa fell to Florence in the 16th century, Lucca resisted and kept its autonomy for centuries, protected by its magnificent Renaissance walls which still stand intact today. This long independence shaped a proud, self-sufficient city with a distinct identity, a rich culinary tradition and an architectural heritage that feels genuinely different from its Tuscan neighbours.

Q: What was the relationship between Pisa and Lucca historically?

The two cities were longstanding rivals. Lucca, an ancient Roman colony strategically positioned on the road from France to Siena and Rome, had grown wealthy through the production of fine fabrics and silk. Pisa, just beyond the nearby hills, was the region's dominant sea power. The two were close enough geographically to be natural competitors and, in fact, their rivalry was so deep that Lucca preferred to ship its goods all the way from Genoa, hundreds of kilometres away, rather than use the port of its neighbouring enemy.

Q: How did silk and trade shape Lucca's history?

Lucca's prosperity was built largely on the production of silk, a technique that had been brought to the West by Venetian merchants who had managed to obtain the closely guarded secrets of Chinese silk making. Lucca's weavers became among the finest in Europe, supplying luxury fabrics to courts and noble families across the continent. This wealth funded the beautiful churches, towers and palaces that still make Lucca's historic centre one of the most elegant in Tuscany.

Q: Can I visit both Pisa and Lucca in a single day and still do them justice?

Absolutely, and the combination works beautifully. Pisa rewards a focused morning visit centred on the Piazza dei Miracoli and the city centre, while Lucca is perfectly suited to a relaxed afternoon of wandering, lunch, cycling on the walls and discovering its hidden piazzas. The two cities are only about 20 kilometres apart, making them a natural pairing for a memorable and varied day out from Florence or anywhere in Tuscany.

History Notes

Pisa's greatness was built on the sea. For much of the Middle Ages it was the dominant naval force of Tuscany, sending its fleets across the Mediterranean to trade with the ports of France, Spain, Portugal, North Africa and Asia. This constant contact with distant civilizations made Pisa one of the most culturally open and intellectually advanced cities of its time, absorbing Moorish refinement, Indian mathematics and artistic influences from across the known world. At the height of this prosperity, around 1100 AD, Pisa built its immense Cathedral on the Piazza dei Miracoli and began construction of the Leaning Tower — a building that would become one of the most recognized architectural wonders on earth, despite, or perhaps because of, the unstable terrain on which it was founded. The city's wealth and sophistication were further confirmed by the founding of its University in 1343, one of the oldest in Italy. Pisa's independence eventually came to an end when Florence conquered it in the 16th century.

Just beyond the hills to the northeast, Lucca had a very different story. Originally a Roman colony commanding the road between France, Siena and Rome, Lucca built its fortune on the production of fine textiles, above all silk, whose closely guarded technique had been brought west by Venetian merchants from China. The city's relationship with neighbouring Pisa was one of enduring rivalry: so deep was the competition that Lucca chose to ship its goods through Genoa, hundreds of kilometres away, rather than use the closer port of its adversary. While Pisa eventually fell to Florence, Lucca defended its independence behind its extraordinary Renaissance walls for far longer, finally succumbing only when Napoleon arrived during his Italian campaign in the 19th century — a remarkable story of resilience that still defines the proud character of the city today.
