1st day – Palermo walking tour with street food tasting. This morning, follow your guide in a fascinating exploration of Sicilian culture and cuisine. The itinerary begins with a morning visit of the Capo market, the oldest in Palermo, where you will see and taste famous Palermo Street Food such as “panelle”, “arancine”, “crocchette” and “PaniCaMeusa”. Admire colorful stalls featuring an abundance of fruit, vegetables, seafood and meats as the sellers’ cry for our attention. Then, visit Palermo that stretches along a beautiful bay on the Tyrrhenian Sea. 2nd day - Morning at leisure to take a stroll through the historic center and find the spots that fascinated you most on your introductory tour. In alternative we will be happy to provide an unforgettable cooking lesson! In the morning, our chef will take you to a colorful local open-air market to buy fresh seasonal ingredients. The cooking class will be held in an extraordinary location, an ancient palace by the sea, and our Sicilian chef will teach you how to create a typical menu in a spacious kitchen where the old copper pots with the shiny blue and white Sicilian tiles create a magical atmosphere. In the afternoon, you will be driven to Monreale to discover the Arab-Norman splendour of the Cathedral and Cloister. This nearby treasure dates from the 12th century and shows the diverse architectural influences of both the Normans and the Arab population. Overnight in Palermo.
3rd day – Check out. Pick up by private driver and Mercedes vehicle and leave to Segesta where you will meet your guide, for a guided tour of the temple and the theatre.
Next stop Erice, a wonderfully preserved mediaeval hill town at the extreme north-west corner of Sicily, on the top of Monte San Giuliano. The town overlooks the city of Trapani and the lower western coast towards the Egadi Islands, where sea salt is made, offering a most breathtaking view. On a clear day, you can see the African coast. You will see the Norman Castle and the Duomo as you walk through the cobble-stoned streets of the town, taking in the fresh air and a variety of aromas emanating from the numerous pastry shops for which Erice is known. You will stop to visit Maria Grammatico's famous pastry shop to see the variety of sweets she lovingly creates. Then, continue to your hotel in Sciacca.
4th day – Pick up by your English speaking driver and guide to visit the wonderful Valley of Temples. As one of the premier Italian destinations, it is easy to forget that Sicily was once a thriving Greek colony. Once in Agrigento join your expert local guide to explore The Valley of the Temples to tour one of Magna Graecia's best preserved temple complexes, and enjoy an in-depth exploration of the complex. You'll hear the amazing story these eight temples tell: from the almost entirely intact Temple of Concordia to the Temple of Hera that suffered in a medieval earthquake and from the Temple of Juno on its hilltop perch to the unfortunate Temple of Zeus, dismantled by greedy builders over the centuries for its stones.
Return at the hotel and afternoon at leisure.
5th day - Check out. Pick up by private drive and transfer to Taormina. On the way, stop at Piazza Armerina to visit the mosaics of the Roman Villa del Casale, named after an agricultural settlement known as casale, or farmhouse, which flourished there in the 15th century. 3,500 square meters of mosaic pavements perfectly intact fill the Roman Villa. Arrival in Taormina: the rest of the day will be available for a tour in the beautiful town, overlooking the sea.
6th day - Pick up by English speaking naturalistic driver guide and Jeep. Then, you will be driven to Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. The first stop of the tour is Valle del Bove, a wide valley located on the eastern slope of the volcano. Valle del Bove is part of the protected area of the Etna Regional Park. Proceeding, you will go through old lava flows that date back to 1979 until you reach Mount Fontana, 1300 meters above the sea level. This is a great panoramic point, from which you can admire the majesty of the valley and of the Monti Sartorius. Afterwards, a short walk will lead you to the craters of the Sartorius Mountains, which date back to 1865 and are characterized by seven little eruptive cones. Halfway down from the top, you will reach another panoramic point which offers a breathtaking view of the Ionian Coast, from Riposto to Taormina and a glimpse of the Calabrian Coast, of the North-East crater and of the latest new lava flows and craters of 2002. Driving up the Mareneve Road, you will reach Piano Provenzana. Here you will have time to relax and enjoy wine tasting and lunch at a local winery. Return to Taormina.
7th day – Pick up by private driver and transfer to Siracusa. Meet your local guide to explore this rich and fascinating city, once one of the major powers of the ancient Greek world, which bears traces of its Roman and Byzantine heritage as well. Visit the remarkable Greek remains, including the Temple of Apollo, which later became a Byzantine church and then an Arab mosque; the impressive Greek theater; and the fabled Fountain of Arethusa. Stroll through the city’s picturesque winding streets and elegant piazzas, and admire the treasures on the island of Ortigia—Syracuse’s historical center—including its great cathedral, built on the Athena Temple, medieval and Baroque buildings and the Street Market. You will enjoy lunch in an amazing historic “Salumeria” located in Ortigia, tasting typical Sicilian products (cold cuts, cheeses and “caponata”).
Return at your hotel in Taormina.
